St Colum’s are hoping to sign off in style with another trophy win

This current crop of young players created their own little piece of history last year by winning the famous old trophy.

And this year they will be going for a clean sweep of local honours having already secured the Mulland and Killowen Cups.

Coach and teacher Brian Shaw is keeping their feet on the ground, however he praised their hard enthusiasm and work ethic.

“All the players are fantastic,” enthused Brian.

“They work incredibly hard for each other they are reaping the rewards because of it.

“They are all very athletic and play with such pace and tempo. The success we have had over the last year is down to them and the way they have gone about things.

“Even when they have fallen behind in games they don’t let it effect them, they just keep going to the final whistle.

“We have five or six players who played in last year’s final who will be playing again this time round.

“It’s fantastic for them to reach another Doherty Cup final. It’s a great occasion and to be able to play at The Showgrounds just caps it all off.

“We are just trying to keep their feet on the ground. People may say we are favourites but you cannot count on anything in football.

“It’s all about who turns up on the night, works hard and produces the performance.

“I’d like to thanks our Principal, Sinead McCullagh for all her support throughout the year, and also fellow coach Seamus Reynolds for all his hard work.”

This year’s final will be the first one to be played as a 9-a-side game.

“Yeah it has all changed this year to keep in line with the smaller sided games, it will be interseting to see how it pans out,” said Brian.

The final is this Thursday night at The Showgrounds . kick-off 7pm. Admission is £2 for adults and £1 for children.
