Slane target a Cup upset against their Comrades

The BAWA travel to Dixon Park to take on Championship One side Ballyclare Comrades on Saturday afternoon (kick-off 1.30pm).

Slane are on fire, having netted 43 goals in just eight Mid-Ulster Intermediate B games so far this season. Meanwhile, their opponents have won just one of their last five games in all competitions - that against Carrick Rangers Reserves in the last round of the Intermediate Cup.

Amidst that run, they even lost out to Amateur League side Crumlin Star. And now Moneyslane skipper Gareth Bingham is keen to pile on the misery.

“They don’t seem to be scoring too many,” he said. “That will be the key, whether or not we can hold them out.

“At the other end, I fancy us to score because we seem to be getting goals from everywhere. Gregg scores plenty up front but we have a lot of other lads chipping in as well.”

Ballyclare visited Slane’s Jubilee Park in pre-season and won 5-1 but Bingham is hoping it will all be a different story in a competitive arena.

He said: “There’s a good relationship between the two clubs after we played them in friendly matches in the last couple of summers.

“We’re taking a supporters’ bus up there and it will be a great day for the club whatever the result. They’ll make plenty of moise whatever happens but we want to try and get the win. We’ve got nothing to lose.

“The more you think about it, the bigger the game seems to get.

“The Glentoran Seconds match was billed as the big one but this is an established Championship One club we’re going to play against.

“Everybody recognises them as a good club so to play them in a competitive match is great for Moneyslane.”

Providing the game goes ahead, it will be the start of a hectic run-in for Slane, who still have 18 league games to play, as well as their defence of the Alan Wilson Cup.
