Moneyslane Select side duo Gareth Bingham and John Davenport are unlikely to be firing in any heavy tackles in Saturday’s big game.

That’s because they’re both big United fans and, as such, are rather excited at stepping onto the pitch alongside some of their sporting heroes.

“I’m really looking forward to it,” said John, who has recently retired from playing with a knee injury.

“I can’t wait now. It’ll be a good day’s entertainment for everybody and Im looking forward to play against some of the idols I’ve been watching over the years supporting United, I’m pinching myself.

“I’m just glad it’s coming. Hopefully I’ll be fit enough to play. It’s great for a wee local club like us.

“It’s going to be a fantastic opportunity for us. Hopefully it will put Moneyslane on the map. There aren’t too many people who know where it is but hopefully after this, they will.

“With the likes of Louis Saha and the other legends coming, it will be a very big day for us.”

Speaking from the club’s sparkling new changing rooms, Gareth was delighted that the newly revamped Jubilee Park was getting a fitting opening.

“When I was growing up, we had nothig like this,” he said. “We had a field and some changing rooms but now they have state of the art changing facilities and the pitch is going to be perfect to play on.

“We definitely want to get promotion to Ibtermediate A this season and then, if it suits, keep going up to Irish League direction. We definitely have the facilities to so it.”

All that’s left for the pair then, is making sure they get the pick of the Legends shirts when it comes to swapping at full-time. John is plumping for NI record goal-scorer David Healy while Gareth will be making a beeline for Healy’s former NI team-mate.

“Keith Gillespie would be one or my idols from a United and a Northern Ireland aspect as well,” he said.

“I remember watching him in those two massive wins against England and Spain. He was an absolute hero of mine.”
