Scarva leak seven after late collapse heaps on misery

Eight minutes into the second half of Saturday’s Mid-Ulster League Division One clash at Scarva Park the home side was awarded a free-kick just outside the Derryhirk penalty area.

Kyle Jennett took a step forward and curled the ball majestically around the defensive wall and towards the bottom right corner of the visitors’ goal.

The keeper dived desperately and got a hand to the ball but it had been struck with too much power and precision and nestled in the back of the net.

That scintillating strike made it 1-1 and Scarva Rangers deserved to be on level terms after a bright and industrious first half display.

That was to be as good as it got for the hosts, however. Derrykirk dominated the closing half hour, scoring an amazing six times in an unstoppable 20 minute spell, including a stunningly ferocious free-kick that was of quite unbelievable quality.

As each goal went in, the visitors appeared to grow in strength while Scarva seemed to wilt.

The players had given everything in the opening hour, perhaps there was nothing left to give and they were ruthlessly swept away by a tidal wave of Derryhirk goals.

The opening 45 minutes had been a free flowing, finely balanced encounter. Scarva started purposefully and created some dangerous attacking opportunities.

The visitors also appeared threatening and squandered the chance to take the lead when a spot-kick was blasted over the Scarva crossbar.

In the latter stages of the first half, the visitors created more and more chances. Scarva goalkeeper Alan Hammond made three brilliant saves in a very short period of time.

It was ominous that he had been called upon to make so many critical saves and two minutes before half-time, Derryhirk broke the deadlock with a goal from a corner.

It was to be the first of many goals for the visitors but the hosts didn’t deserve to end up suffering such an emphatic defeat.

Scarva Rangers quiz

Scarva Rangers are holding a fundraising quiz this Saturday night (22 November).

The quiz is being held in the Ballymore Inn, Tandragee, at 8pm sharp.

The entry fee is £5 per brain and there will be a cash prize for the winners.
