Scarva can't find equaliser in league match

A stunning second half strike scuppered Scarva's hopes of claiming a point in their league match with Knockmenagh Swifts.

It put the home side 2-1 ahead and the visitors were unable to find an equaliser in the remaining minutes.

The afternoon had started well for the village side. An Alex Hammond header was cleared off the goal line as they made a promising start to their Mid-Ulster Division Two encounter in Lurgan.

Sam Boyd fired his side ahead with a clinical strike but the hosts were soon back on level terms.

Scarva played some enterprising football in the first half. A clever piece of play from Freddie McKelvey put his side on the attack but an inviting cross was cleared before a Rangers player could reach it.

Some excellent defending from Knockmenagh Swifts denied Alex Hammond and later Stephen Gass, who was about to connect with a Sam Boyd cross when the ball was taken off his toe.

There were chances at both ends in the second half. Derek Patton headed a dangerous cross away from the Scarva goal and Gass fired a shot at the home side’s goal but it was wide of the target.

Then came that sensational volley that was to prove so decisive.

A Sam Boyd shot flew over the crossbar and at the other end of the pitch Stuart Wilson made a terrific save to prevent his side slipping further behind.
