Rathfriland U13s close in on table toppers Moira

Rathfriland U13s travelled to Portadown to face top of the table side Moira in the Mid Ulster Youth League and came away with a 3-1 win and all three points to move up to fourth in the table with a game in hand of the leaders.

Rathfriland started the game brightly and within minutes were awarded with a penalty after Jack Rodgers was fouled
in the area.

Unfortunately the usually unerring Brendan Tumilty was unable to convert from the spot.

It was Tumilty, however, who minutes later created the chance for Cormac McElroy to cleverly chip the advancing Moira keeper to open the scoring.

Moira hit back to make it 1-1 before McElroy burst through again to score his second of the game. Rathfriland were lucky to make it to the break in the lead with Moira hitting the woodwork and firing narrowly wide in the dying minutes of the half.

The second half saw Rathfriland control the game with Andrew Pollock outstanding at right back and ably assisted by Ryan Mackey, Jerome McPolin and Jack Baird in defence.

The result was put beyond doubt when a blistering run on the left from Niall Husarz ended with him crossing to the clinical McElroy to slot home and complete another hat-trick for the Wee Whites.

Coach Stephen Brannigan, who was delighted with the performance, said: “The guys have worked hard to get back to winning ways after two very unfortunate defeats.”
