No, it’s not that Glenn Ferguson but, added to the signing of former Loughgall defender Darragh Peden, boss David Johnstone is hoping the trio will drive the club forward.

“Brian’s a quality, quality striker,” he said of the former Annagh United skipper.

“He’s in great shape. With his back to goal, he’s probably the best striker in Mid-Ulster. He will work very hard for the team. Now we have him, Gregg (Harrison) and Mark Ervine playing for two shirts unless we go three up top. All three of them will score plenty of goals.

“This Glenn Ferguson’s a winger from Derriaghy and we’ve also signed Joinny Gibson from Rathfriland. That’s made it four in and hopefully a couple more to come.

“I’m very happy with the way the squad’s shaping up. We’ve got the right type of player in, who play the way we want to play. We’re looking forward to the season now.”

Slane are one off the top division in Mid-Ulster football and while the club are aiming high, Johnstone is urging caution:

“We’re progressing without being silly,” he said. “We’ll take things one step at a time.

“I don’t want to wish going all the way to the Championship too soon. If we can establish ourselves as a leading Mid-Ulster club for a couple of years, that’s absolutely fine. We don’t want to go to the Championship too early and struggle.

“The fans who travel through Mid-Ulster might not travel to Moyola or Portstewart and then there’s the structure changes as well.”
