Premier League opponents outshine Rangers

PREMIER League opponents Newington YC travelled to Iveagh Park on Saturday and progressed into the next round thanks to a much-improved second half performance.

It was really game of two halves as the locals continued their recent good form with a solid first half performance, but failed to come out for the second half.

Rathfriland had the best of the action and chances in the first half with Toal and Gibbons missing good chances in the first 10 minutes.  Beck and Coulter were a constant threat down the flanks for the home side with Wilson proving a handful up front.

A blizzard started to blow across Iveagh Park with 15 minutes left of the first half and it was during this that Newington enjoyed their best spell.  The quick thinking winger intercepted a goal kick by Waddell and he released Adams for the simplest of tap ins as Newington YC went in front against the run of play.

Minutes later Wilton saved brilliantly from the same player to keep the scoreline 1-0 at half time.

The second half was all about who would score next.   However, it was Rathfriland who failed to come out with the same passion and intensity of play, as is the first, with Newington getting much stronger as the half progressed.

Midway through the second half Newington YC increased their lead when Adams headed a defensive clearance into the path of the right-winger.  The winger sprinted clear of the home defence and crossed to the back post for the sub to head into the corner of the net.

Minutes later the game was over as a contest when Newington scored again, shooting into the corner of the net, past the outstretched hand of Wilton.
