Patched-up Slane seen off by league leaders

Moneyslane’s hopes of causing an upset against league leaders Newry were dashed on Saturday as they were beaten 4-1.

Even before the game kicked off that task was made even more difficult. Already without the suspended Chris Kerr, both Robert Murdoch and Ritchie Nesbitt withdrew from the squad.

Newry had a great chance to take the lead when the striker broke through one on one but Blevins produced a fantastic double save. Slane had a good chance after a good passing movement but the shot was charged down. Just before half-time, Newry took the lead when a corner was not cleared and the subsequent shot took a defection past the home keeper.

The home team started the second half well and created a few half chances but Newry were more comfortable in possession and squandered two good chances to extend their lead with a shot off the post and another narrowly wide.

Then Slane got on top and had a great chance to equalise when Harrison broke down the right wing and crossed beautifully for Whitten at the back post but four yards out he lost the ball in the sun and it hit the side netting. Moneyslane felt aggrieved with Newry’s second as Greg harrison was given offside in the build-up. To make matters worse, almost immediately Newry scored again following poor defending to go 3-0 up. Both Adair and Davenport then also came off injured with Fairley and Boyd coming on. A fourth goal came soon after as Newry dominated proceedings.  Towards the end the home team did get a spell on top and scored a good goal when Harrison was played in and he slotted past the keeper.
