Not a good day at the office for U10s

Rathfriland U10 Swifts 2 Warrenpoint Town U10s 6

THE Swifts were forced to battle hard against a strong and well drilled ‘Point outfit and despite some fine goalkeeping by Alan McKinght slipped 3-0 down before the break.

On the restart the local lads began to play much better football and a Mark Bronte corner was headed in at the back post by Caolan Teer.

Leon Shimmons and Darcy Burns were playing well at the back but the seasider’s passing and long range shooting was magnificent allowing them to go further ahead.

In the final period some great tackling in midfield by Rhys McKee released Ben Johnston who found Caolan Teer on the right who in turn got to the bye line and crossed for Bronte to volley home.

A strong finish from the locals left the coaches wondering what might have been if they had got it going from the first whistle.

Rathfriland U10 Colts 2 v Annalong U10s 5

Captain Matthew Cromie’s new look Colts were slow to get going on Saturday and despite some great saves from Ronan Burns they found themselves 3-0 down at the end of the first period.

After some reshuffling at the break the local lads started passing the ball about on the great 4G surface and a slick passing move between Darren Sloan, Jonny McGivern and Adam Cromie provided Jordan Magowan with an opportunity to finish magnificently for 3-1.

The introduction of Scott Chambers in the centre of defense provided the stability for Rathfriland to build from the back as he began to link the play between defense, midfield and the forwards.

Danielle Megaw was finding herself in space and went close with three strikes from distance during the second period. Just as Rathfriland were getting back into the game they were caught out on the break and Annalong scored again.

However the local lads were not to be out done and a great long distance pass from Chambers found Matthew Cromie in space and his quick accurate pass found the goal hungry Magowan in the right place again to rifle in a fine shot.

Another reshuffle saw Magowan provide some great defensive cover with Sloane and Chambers running the midfield.

And it was Sloane who went close with two superb long range efforts, one hitting the crossbar and the second was tipped onto the post and wide by the Annalong keeper.

From the corner McGivern shot was blocked on the line by a packed defense. With time nearly up the Rathfriland could only watch as the Annalong team broke clear to score their fifth of the day.
