Narrow defeat for Scarva

The village side were unfortunate to succumb to defeat in a closely contested clash at Scarva Park on an evening that felt more like winter than Spring.

Noel Hamilton forced the visiting keeper to produce a fine save and the hosts also hit the crossbar during the first half but it was Blackers Mill Reserves who scored the only goal of the opening 45 minutes from the penalty spot.

An Ernie Hammond header was well saved by the visiting goalkeeper early in the second half but he was powerless to keep out a coolly dispatched spot kick from Hamilton, awarded for hand ball.

Nathan Dodds made a series of crucial saves as the visitors piled on the pressure but in spite of his outstanding efforts the goal that re-established their lead finally arrived.

It was to prove a short-lived lead. A dangerous Alex Hammond cross to the back post was headed into the heart of the penalty area by Kris Heron and Rod Douglas steered the ball home from close range.

Alex Hammond then struck the woodwork with a mesmerising volley from 35 yards.

The home side’s frustration deepened after this near miss as the visitors struck the decisive goal of the match in the dying stages.
