Moira claim their first silverware in memorial cup

Trevor, whose kind and generous donations helped the club with the purchase of kits in its early days, sadly passed away in November 2012, but the family wanted to keep his memory alive through football and put up a trophy in his name.

And the first name on that trophy will be Moira FC after the team’s victory in a dramatic final against Lisburn United.

Heavy rain meant that the rest of the seven teams that competed in the tournament had left before the final took place, leaving a small number of parents and friends of those who were playing on the sidelines.

The match, however, deserved a much larger audience, with the winners decided in a penalty shoot-out.

Moira, who had lost to Lisburn United in the earlier round-robin stage, came out flying and took a deserved first-half lead with a beautifully finished breakaway goal.

Lisburn United were still very much in the match though and they levelled in the second half with an equally well taken goal, tucked in at the back post after a cross from the left wing.

When the match finished 1-1 after normal time an extra five minutes were played in an attempt to prevent the match being decided on penalties.

Such was the highly competitive nature of the game though that neither defence was in a mood to give anything away for a second time and - almost inevitably - a penalty shoot-out was required.

Moira’s first kick went over the crossbar, but they went on to score the rest and with Lisburn United failing twice the Cup went to the home team.

This team will enter the Lisburn Invitational Youth League next season, the first time that a Moira FC team has entered league football.
