McGrory fires Glenavon into cup semi-finals

GLENAVON produced their best performance of the season to stun Glentoran and book their place in the semi-final of the IRN-BRU League Cup at Mourneview Park on Monday night.

After a series of league defeats including a 5-1 hammering at Crusaders at the weekend, few fans would have dared hope the Lurgan Blues could have progressed past the Glens.

However, two goals from Andy McGrory and a brilliant man of the match performance from goalkeeper Andy Coleman gave Glenavon the verdict which will hopefully act as a spur for the rest of the season.

“From the start to the finish the boys were excellent,” said manager Gary Hamilton. “It was the first time we played that formation and the way we hit them on the counter was excellent at times.

“As a unit we were strong and we also had a mental toughness which has been lacking but we have to produce that performance again on Saturday against Donegal Celtic.

“It is great for the club to reach the semi-final but it is just one game, now we have to string a few good results together.”
