The former Glenavon midfielder netted his first two goals for the club on Saturday, the first of those a sweetly struck free-kick. That’s a type of goal Town have been lacking so far this season and boss Ryan Watson was delighted with their newfound threat.

“Stuart showed his quality, experience and worth at a vital time during a key game,” he said.

“He won the free-kick himself and stood up to drill it low into the bottom corner. Their keeper had absolutely no chance.

“I think it’s probably the first free-kick we’ve scored direct this season. It’s great to have somebody who can do that.

“Over those last 25 minutes, Stuart was brilliant, creating chances, getting in on goal himself and he tucked away his second goal really well.”

Watson also praised his deadline-day signing Jamie Smith, who scored with his very first touch for the club.

“Jamie’s goal made the victory even sweeter,” said the manager “It was a great team move. Kevin Anderson set Matty McCartan away and he picked out Jamie with a superb cross. He finished it very well.

“He was only on the pitch for about 10 minutes but that’s all he needed to show what he’s all about. He finished his chance really well and that augers well for the rest of the season.
