League leaders edge it against Cookstown Olympic

Cookstown Olympic travelled to play league leaders Ballyclare Comrades Reserves last Saturday and lost 2-0.

The match started with both teams looking for openings with Olympic getting early shots on target from Ryan O’Neill and Oisin MacNia, forcing the Comrades keeper to make saves.

As the half progressed it was Ballyclare who created the better chances, but Donovan McGuckin saved easily. With only four minutes of the first half remaining Olympic had the first clear cut chance as Tiarnan Brennan put a ball over the top for Danny McNulty to go clear. With the defender catching his heel as he got into the box but he kept going with the keeper smothering the shot.

Comrades came out strong in the second half and with two minutes gone Olympic keeper McGuckin had to make a good save while a harsh penalty was awarded five minutes later for hand ball. The penalty taker fluffed his lines as he pulled the ball well wide but they made the most of a lucky deflection on 52 minutes to take the lead.

Olympic pushed forward and went close from with chances from Oisin MacNia and Tiarnan Brennan while getting caught on the break to concede a second after 80 minutes. With Olympic down to 10 men they pushed to get something out of the match but Comrades were content to sit back and defend for the win.

This Saturday, Olympic will play at Beechway in the quarter final of The Canada Trophy against 3rd Ballyclare OB a 1.30pm kick off.

Training will continue at 8pm on Thursdays on the synthetic pitch at MUSA.

The Lucky 4 Lottery numbers for Saturday 6th February were 5, 15, 16 and 21. There were no winners who matched four numbers for the £550 jackpot. There were no winners of the £30 prize for 3 numbers. The jackpot will now be to £550 for next week’s draw and tickets are available from any committee or team member.

The club are running a Last Man Standing competition which started on Saturday 6th February.
