LADIES GOING FOR CUP GLORY

DROMORE Amateurs Ladies have reached the NIWFA Championship Cup final for the first time in eight years after defeating Limavady 3-1 to earn themselves a well deserved place in the final.

They face 2012 league winners and current cup holders, Cliftonville Ladies, at Lisburn Distillery on Monday, September 3, (7.30pm kick-off).

The route to the final hasn't been easy - in the quarter final stage they faced rivals Donegal Celtic away from home with several players missing.

After quite a closely contested match, Dromore edged closer to the final with a 1-0 win, thanks to a second-half goal from Amanda Morton.

Up next was another tricky match, away to Limavady who had recently beaten the Dromore ladies in a league encounter. Dromore made hard work for themselves, initially going a goal down, before Amanda Morton equalised. Goals in extra time from Tracy Orr and Amanda Morton ensured Dromore got the result they needed for the final.

Finals don't come around too often for Dromore, but after recent league form, manager Roger McCartan believes that if all players step up to the mark they have what it takes to beat Cliftonville and end their eight year trophy drought.

Cliftonville have had a great season but when they played Dromore in the league, it was their toughest test, so Dromore will be looking to build on that result.

Unfortunately last season’s player of the year Debbie Douglas misses out due to holiday commitments. She is an invaluable asset to the squad who will be missed by all the girls on the day.

Dromore have a number of other players who can help win them the cup: Kerry Taggart (centre forward) who has plenty of pace and bags of skill that will always threaten Cliftonville’s defence; Diane Pearson (sweeper) who will marshal the back line and stop Cliftonville’s attacks; Amanda Morton (centre midfielder) who has the drive and determination capped with great ball winning and passing abilities; and Tracy Orr, their inspirational captain who will distribute the ball from midfield and make crucial tackles.

It will need a huge effort from all the Dromore squad working together as a team, to win this Championship cup final.
