‘I was embarrassed to be manager of that team’ - Watson

Town were dumped 4-0 by a Glebe Rangers side who had lost four of their last five league outings.

It was Town’s third successive defeat and the worst performance of the lot, leaving Watson far from a happy camper.

“It was an absoute shocker,” he said frankly.

“It was the worst performance since I took charge of this team. I was totally embarrassed to be manager of that team and it’s definitely not good enough for me to be a part of that.

“Since I took the job, I have never publicly had a go at the players but Saturday was indefensible. They let me down massively and they know that.

“We had no fight, no desire, nothing. To make matters worse, Glebe aren’t even one of the league’s better sides.

“Yes, they had a new manager but we had spoken to the players and asked them to make sure they arrived with the right attitude. We asked them to think about whether they had been doing enough over the best few weeks but that message must have fallen on deaf ears.

“The only thing to do at a time like this is for people to get their heads down, work hard and fight for the jersey.”

Town captain Stephen Greene took a Banbridge Town Supporters’ Club Facebook page to apologise for the display.

“(I’m) embarassed and ashamed,” he said.

“Sorry for the supporters who travelled to see the disgrace of a performance (on Saturday). Total shambles. Sorry you had to see that.”

Town had been beaten 4-2 by Sport and Leisure Swifts and 3-0 at home to Newington in the two games leading up to Saturday’s trip to Glebe and Watson had hoped his players would make up for those disappointments.

“We expected a response,” he said. “We got one for the first 10 minutes but as soon as the first goal went in, they collapsed. They may as well have got on the bus there and then.

“As a player, I wouldn’t have accepted a performance like that.”
