Have Slane made history with controversial goal?

SLANE entertained Stranmillis at Rathfriland High School at the weekend in the Foster Cup and went into the next round with a narrow 1-0 win and a goal that could go down in history with the league with camera technology used on the day by the man in the middle.

The game only five minutes in when controversy ascended on the man in the middle of the park, who had already turned up late. John Davenport swung a cross into the box, the keeper fumbled the ball which bounced in behind the line. The referee pointed to the centre circle for the goal.

The Stranmillis management and goal keeper went berserk. The referee spotted a camera man at the by-line so he proceeded to ask if there was a picture taken of the goal. He was in luck as the happy snapper had it all on camera.

After looking at the picture the referee preceded with game and the goal stood. Are Moneyslane Football Club the first team in the Mid-Ulster to have had the privilege of camera goal line technology?

Feeney had to be replaced early in the game and Nigel Fry pulled of two good saves from long throws from the visitors, finger tipping one over the bar and plucking it out of the top corner of the net. The second was pushed around the post when it had a goal written all over it.

Slane’s back four of Neil Hanna, Neil Wilson, Jonny O’Neill and Chris McConville were strong and they had to work overtime with the big centre forward who was very hard to mark.

Thomas McCann picked out Neil Bingham and he hit well only for the keeper to save. Mark Anderson found Mark Ervine who hit just wide of the up right.

Slane came out fighting hard in the second half but were pushed deep into their own half for long periods. Ervine hit just over, Ryan Weir hit wide and McCann hit over the top.

Nigel Fry was superb in the Slane goals and was showing a safe pair of hands on the day.

Slane worked hard and held on at the last to go through to the next round where they will meet Moria or Lurgan BBOB.

Best for Slane was Nigel Fry between the sticks for Slane and it was dig deep performance by all the team on the day.
