First U21 call-up for Shay McCartan

SHAY McCartan has earned his first call-up to the Northern Ireland U21 squad, Leader Sport understands.

The Banbridge teenager has been rewarded for an outstanding season at Burnley, where he has scored 22 times for Burnley’s youth team.

And after featuring regularly for the club’s reserves, the former Glenavon youngster, 17, made his first team debut as a substitute against Doncaster Rovers on Easter Monday.

The squad heads to Macedonia for a game in Kumanova on May 10 as part of the 2013 UEFA Under-21 European Championships.
