Excellent day out for Rathfriland U8s

RATHFRILAND FC Under 8s were out again last Saturday morning at the IFA Development centre and had another excellent day out with a total of three fixtures.

Firstly an 8-a-side game took place against Damolly, resulting in a 6–4 scoreline to Rathfriland. Shane Huaghey scored the opener with Alex McKee also getting on the score sheet. Adam Trimble and Harry Annett both also got two goals.

Connor McElroy had an excellent half in nets and Christopher McConville, Ross Chambers, Reuben Toal and James Walsh had super defensive displays with Aaaron Baxter joining in on the attack with his usual tenacious play.

The opposition in the second game of the day for Rathfriland U8s was a very skilful Midway team who gave Rathfriland a good run for their money.

Midway put the Rathfriland goal under pressure from the first whistle but with James Walsh in great form in goals, Rathfriland were able to ride the storm. Ross Chambers then made a break out of defence and found Adam Trimble with a great pass, who then put in a pin point cross into the box for Connor McElroy to poke home for the first goal of the game.

Midway dug deep and levelled the scores to make it 1-1. Reuben Toal started to take control of the middle of the park and produced a number of strong attacking runs into the Midway penalty box.

This pressure eventually paid off with Rathfriland taking the lead again with a great strike from Reuben Toal.

In the final stages of the game the Rathfriland boys started to tire and Midway scored their second goal of the game to give a final score of 2-2.

In the last game Rathfriland defeated a second Damolly team 16–5 although it has to be said that the average age of the Damolly outfit was less than Rathfriland’s due to them having an extra U-7 team.

In the early stages Damolly gave Rathfriland a scare going in level at the break at 3–3 with Shane Haughey, Alex McKee and a super strike from distance by Christopher McConville levelling the scores. Alex McKee scored a second while Haughey got another four goals and Harry Annett got seven goals leaving the final score at 16–5.

This was another strong set of performances from the boys who continue to show how they have developed their football skills over the last number of weeks.
