Derry City goalkeeper Gerard Doherty admits this Sunday’s FAI Ford Cup final against St Patrick’s Athletic, at Lansdowne Road, will be bittersweet for him.

Two years ago the net-minder kept a private promise he made after having carried the remains of his late grandfather Jim McDaid into St. Mary’s Church in Creggan on the morning of the final before making a hectic dash to Dublin for the game.

This weekend’s repeat final means Doherty will be thinking about his late grandfather and he hopes for a similar result.

Doherty spoke to Sentinel Sport’s Editor Kevin McLaughlin.
