Dark weekend for Whites

Irish Cup fever hit New Grosvenor for the game against Queens University with the chance to earn a place in the Quarter final of the famous cup competition the prize for the victors.

The visitors arrived very much in form have only lost one game in all competitions so far this season and having defeated another Championship one side, Limavady United, in the last round whilst the home side went into the game after seeing off PSNI following a replay in the previous round.

The game started fairly evenly with the Whites’ Stuart Thompson having the first attempt of the match albeit from just over the halfway line his volley safely sailing over Declan Brown’s crossbar.

The home side then had the first real chance of the game as an inch perfect through ball from Chris Kingsberry found the run off Nathan McConnell however, his shot was superbly saved by Brown in the Queen’s goal.

Queen’s however, were matching the Whites well and it was no surprise when they broke the deadlock and went one-nil up as Bertie Fulton hit the target. A long throw in was flicked on by Aaron Thompson to enable Fulton to take it down before shuffling the ball onto his right foot and then placing his shot in at the near post.

On thirty five minutes Aaron Thompson had a free kick in a dangerous area his effort falling on the roof of McBride’s net, then shortly afterwards Queen’s should have had a second as a counter attack saw four on one the ball eventually falling to Lavery only for his shot to be spectacularly saved by McBride’s leg.

Lisburn Distillery got the second half underway and it was the home team who had the first chance of the second half as Darren Nixon’s Toe-poke was cleared off the line by the Queen’s goalscorer Fulton on forty seven minutes. Any hopes of a fight back by Distillery however, were effectively ended on fifty minutes when Queen’s were awarded a penalty. After being sent clear on a one on one with the home keeper, Stephen McDowell was brought down by Ryan McBride. Up stepped Lavery to seal the tie but McBride responded superbly to save the penalty in fantastic fashion, however, from the rebound Fulton was quickest to react, his cross finding Michael Allison to tap it into the open net on fifty one minutes.
