Cup success for Slane

They secured the club’s first ever intermediate trophy with a hard-fought 1-0 win over Bourneview Mill at Crystal Park on Friday evening.

Jonny Kernaghan netted the only goal of the game to seal a historic victory, much to the delight of boss David Johnstone.

“The performance wasn’t great but all that matters in a final is the result,” said the manager.

“We got the job done, Mr Alan Wilson is back at Jubilee Park for a year and that’s all that counts.

“The reaction of the fans and everyone invovled with the club showed that the significance of the result wasn’t lost on anyone.

“Everyone came back to Jubilee Park to enjoy our first Intermediate trophy. It’s a big step for the club.

“It’s one thing winning leagues and cups at junior level but, no disrespect to that level of football, it’s a different thing to win an intermediate trophy.

“It’s a huge statement of where the club’s future lies and it was great to be able to play a part in it.

“It was really nice to give something back to the club that has been such a big part of my life.”

The win marked a sterling end to the season for the club, who finished in fourth place in Intermediate B.

Now they’re hoping to leave the division behind in the not too distant future.

“Winning the Cup was a great experience for the fans and for the committee,” he said.

“As a club, now we want to push forward and win more silverware. Our next priority will be winning promotion. We really want to establish ourselves as an Intermediate A club in the next few years.”
