Cash ease past Crewe in derby

Ballymacash Rangers travelled the short distance up the Glenavy Road last Saturday to take on Intermediate A rivals Crewe United.

And were rewarded with all three points after a hard-working but well deserved performance against the men from the Crewe.

Rangers started off the more lively of the two teams playing some decent football throughout the side on a great surface with Crewe mainly relying on counter attacking football, with their two pacy wide men causing the Rangers defence most of the trouble.

After a decent spell of pressure it was finally the ‘Cash’ who took the lead, when a quick thinking short corner from Kenny Campbell and Stuarty Orr caught the home side defence napping with the latters cross being headed against the bar by James Guiney, the ball dropping for young Jordan Campbell to hammer the ball home for his first senior goal for Ballymacash on his first start for the team.

Rangers continued to dominate with Campbell and N Friars on the wings causing the Crewe defence most of the trouble, but the Rangers were unable to add to their lead and where caught by a Crewe counter-attack when a long ball over the top caught out the Rangers rearguard allowing the Crewe centre forward to nip in and tuck the ball past the advancing Jason Campbell to level the scores.

It was Crewe Uniteds turn now to add the pressure as they gained confidence from this leveller, however, it was Ballymacash who thought they had took the lead when a cross drilled from the right was met by Guiney at the back post, the big defender tucking the ball away only for the ref to blow wrongly for offside, the ref somehow missing a Crewe defender standing on the goal line.

Rangers finally did get their noses in front when Orr played in Andy Patterson, whos cross was firmly met by striker Kenny Campbell to send Rangers 2-1 up at half-time.

The two-half was much more sub-dued than the first half with the home side rarely troubling the ‘Cash’ defence and keeper and Ballymacash content to hold on to what they had although they should have maybe added to the win on a few occasions, only for a lack of finishing.

Credit must be given to Crewe United’s playing surface and in fact overall facilities, as it really is quite an impressive set-up they have built for themselves.
