Carniny carry league's Junior Cup hopes

ONCE again, the Ballymena Saturday Morning League's hopes of capturing the Coca-Cola Junior Cup for the first time in the league's history lie squarely on the shoulders of Carniny Rangers.

Robert Young's side are the only remaining SML side in the competition after Randalstown Sky Blues exited after a 3-1 home defeat by Aghadowey.

There were no such problems, however, for Carniny, who ran out 4-1 winners against Dungannon Rovers.

Carniny Rangers 4, Dungannon Rovers 1: The visitors had a dream start with a goal in five minutes after a great flowing move from defence cut open the Carniny defence for Rovers to score.

Carniny were back on level terms 5 minutes later when Roger Jones sent in a deep free kick which his Captain Jason Robinson headed into the net to level the tie.

Then with 6 minutes left of the half the Rovers Captain was sent off for violent play and this gave Carniny the advantage.

On the half time whistle they took the lead when a brilliant cross field pass from Mark Waddell was collected by Scott Drummond and he fired in a shot which the Rovers keeper could not hold and substitute Leslie McCaughern was on hand to knock the ball home and send Carniny in one up at half time.

The second half saw the best of Carniny as they ran riot. McCaughern sent Neil McFadden clear on the left and he outpaced the Rovers defence before squaring the ball unselfishly to Drummond who had a simple tap in to make it 3-1.

Carniny were well on top now and went close before they got their fourth goal when Alan Cochrane broke clear down the left and he laid the ball into the path of the inrushing Roger Jones who scrambled the ball home.

BSML DIVISION ONE

Connor 2, Ahoghill Rovers 3: Ahoghill Rovers came into this league game on the back of a good win last week against Carnlough and they continued with another good win against Connor

Rovers were causing Connor lots of problems with Johnny Spence the architect with his pace and good link up play with Jason Logan which resulted in the opening goal for the Rovers. Jason Logan was released down the flank and after beating his man he crossed superbly for Johnny Spence who had continued his run and the nippy frontman beat the Connor keeper from 6 yards with a low powerful finish.

Connor looked to break on the counter and they drew level when a pass by Darren Campbell released Darryl Coyle who calmly placed his shot past Andrew French in the Rovers goal.

It was only a matter of time before the Rovers went ahead and it was from great play in midfield by Ryan Morrow and Ryan Connor that saw Jason Logan run clear and he slotted the ball under the onrushing keeper to send Rovers in 2-1 at half time.

The second half started very much like the first with Connor on the back foot and it didn't take long for Johnny Spence to add his second when his persistence saw him break clear and he found the top corner of the net.

When Darren Campbell broke through for Connor he was brought down inside the area and Gary Sands cooly slotted home the resultant penalty but Connor could not find an equaliser.

Seven Towers 4, Dunloy Athletic 1: Seven Towers produced a powerful performance to inflict a first league defeat of the season on Dunloy.

It was Towers who surged ahead when left back Nicky McCooke crossed for Sean Norris to nod home.

The home side's tails were up and they soon doubled their lead. Again good work down the left side freed Micky King who crossed for Simon Murray to expertly dispatch into the bottom corner.

Dunloy seemed unable to cope with Seven Towers down the left flank and this time a Barry McArdle cross failed to be cleared and the ball dropped to Peter Marrs who fizzed in from 18 yards.

Dunloy though refused to lie down and got themselves back into the match just before the break. A long diagonal ball found Chris Brady who cut inside the fullback and rifled a sublime half volley beyond a helpless Stephen Marrs.

Simon Murray had a second half penalty well saved by Dunloy keeper Jerome McAllister. Undeterred Towers continued to be dangerous on the break and they got their fourth goal when Mickey King rounded off an excellent passing move to make the points safe.

Braid United 1, Templepatrick 2: The bottom two teams in the second division produced a great game that totally belied their position in the league,

It was the away side who went into the break one up when Davy Moore smashed a 25 yarder through a wall of players beating the impressive Braid keeper who didn't see it coming after a poor clearance from a corner.

Templepatrick's Steffan Getty had his penalty saved by the ever impressive Braid keeper Dean Adams and in a change of fortune the home side drew level after they were awarded a penalty kick which Derek Montgomery scored setting up a epic last 20 minutes. With five minutes on the clock Scott Carnwath head home the winner for Templepatrick from 12 yards after a pinpoint cross from Jonny Field.

BSML DIVISION THREE

FC Penarol 1, Atletico Antrim 3: Penarol lost their 100% League record when they were beaten by Atletico Antrim who were good value for the three points.

The turning point was around the half hour mark when Kyle Walker in goal for Atletico pulled off an incredible double save.

A few minutes later a free kick delivered from the right was headed in at the back post by Andrew Mulholland to send the visitors in one up at half time.

Atletico went 2-0 around the hour mark when the ball was collected just inside the opposition half by Mark Burrows who carried the ball 10 yards before striking the ball low into the bottom corner from about 25 yards.

A few minutes later it was three for the visitors when a Penarol defended dwelt on the ball allowing Michael Moran to steal the ball and race free into the box slotting the ball into the net with a calm side foot finish.

Penarol came back strong, pulling back a goal through Johnny Clarke but Atletico recorded a memorable victory.

Cushendall 4, Steadfast 3: Cushendall flew out of the blocks, hounding Steadfast and not letting them have any time on the ball which led to the opening goal after only 3 minutes. A long throw by Sean Birt which was won by Micheal Gettons was flicked on by Stephen McKeegan and Thomas Quinn rose to flick it in the far corner.

This stirred Steadfast who upped there game and their pressure paid off when they equalised through Ryan McAuley on the tenth minute.

Cushendall pushed on and with the game looking quite even Stephen McKeegan got a lucky break on the edge of the box and lashed home t to the delight of the Cushendall fans.

Steadfast were stunned but responded in the best possible way scoring not once but twice through Tyler McAuley and William Dixon to go into halftime leading 3-2.

The team talk from the Cushendall manager must have did the trick for within 2 minutes of the restart Cushendall were level with some great work in the middle of the park by Micheal Gettons and a great pass by Stephen McKeegan who created the opening for Thomas Quinn to score.

The next goal was crucial and it came to Cushendall. Some neat passing led to a throw on the left hand side and Aodhan Quinn took the quick throw which found Aiden McNaughton who fired home from an acute angle leaving the visitors keeper with no chance.
