Banbridge Rangers travelled to Tandragee to face Markethill Swifts in their first match of the League Cup and came away with a victory and three points.

Rangers started the game brightly and controlled the game early on.

The breakthrough didn’t come until the half way stage of the first half, when a neat through ball was played from the midfield to Andrew Trimble who finished past the keeper.

Within minutes Rangers were two goals up when the trickery of Matthew Smylie enabled him to beat his marker and drill the ball into the box to the feet of Davy Barr who slotted the ball into the bottom corner.

Against the run of play Markethill were able to grab a goal back on the counter attack when the ball was not dealt with by the Rangers defence.

Rangers were able to regain their two goal advantage with Davy Barr getting his second of the day.

Markethill got themselves back into the game when they scored a free kick.

This didn’t dishearten the Rangers players who again pushed for a two goal advantage and got their reward when a Dean McIlvena corner was met at the back post by Matty Burns.

Man of the Match for Rangers was goalscoring centre back Matthew Burns.

The Under 16s will get to experience a large home support under the lights this Friday evening at Cheney Park with Annagh United the visitors for the 8.15pm kick off.
