Away trip proves a bridge too far for Scarva as Riverdale win

Having endured two heavy defeats in their opening league matches, Scarva travelled to Benburb on Saturday hoping to make it third time lucky.

It didn’t turn out that way but a depleted Rangers side emerged from the fixture with enormous credit.

They showed huge character not to use the absence of key players as an excuse to capitulate.

Confidence would have been low after conceding 15 goals in their previous two outings but they broke the deadlock in Saturday’s encounter with Riverdale.

The Rangers keeper found left-back Wes Baird with a quick throw and he embarked on a marauding run down the left flank. His cross was flicked on by Stephen Hendron and Kris Heron supplied an unerring finish.

Riverdale missed a gilt edged opportunity to level matters when they blasted the ball over the bar from close range but they had better luck from distance midway through the half, equalising with a deflected effort from 20 yards out.

Kyle Jennett fired the ball enticingly into the heart of the home side’s area but none of his team mates could apply a touch to steer it into the net.

The hosts took the lead with a headed goal from a corner and at the other end the Riverdale keeper denied Stephen Hendron, saving with his feet after a header from Kris Heron sent Hendron racing towards goal.

Riverdale tightened their grip on the three points with a third goal before the interval, the home side’s forward showing too much strength for the visitors.

Scarvagot back to 3-2 after the interval when Stephen Hendron flicked the ball on and substitute Wells lobbed skilfully over the keeper.

Best for Scarva Rangers – Wes Baird was once again magnificent.

A special mention must go to two players who may not have been expecting to see first team action this season. Freddie McKelvey gave an exemplary performance in midfield that rolled back the years while Wayne Jordan was a defensive rock at right back.
