Fast past at Wheelers’ road races last week

It was another busy week for West Down Wheelers, running two events on both Tuesday and Wednesday night.

The first was the final leg of the John Maxwell Memorial Aussie Pursuit on Tuesday. The pace was fast from the off at the Creamery on this relatively short 16.5 mile course. Riders felt the pace early on with the favourites in the scratch group wasting no time in bringing all groups together with a view to a win. It was Rodney Stewart of TVR who showed a great turn of speed approaching Magherally, just pipping Paul Wilkinson to the line.

Result; 1 R.Stewart (TVR), 2 J.Kernaghan (WDW), 3 P.Wilkinson (WDW), 4 D.McKnight (TVR), 5 D.Lynas (WDW)

Wednesday hosted the re-scheduled Katesbridge Road race postponed due to heavy rain at the beginning of July. Another pleaseing turnout for the second night in a row saw 19 riders split over 4 groups with a total of 10 minutes handicap. Sam Cantley and Jack Priestley showed some very strong riding off the front but it wasn’t to be as they were caught at Ballyroney on the final lap before a fast finish saw John Kernaghan led to the line where he took the win.

Result; 1 J.Kernaghan (WDW), 2 T.Beattie (TVR), 3 M.Shilliday (WDW), 4 N.Seffen (WDW), 5 J.Priestley U16 (WDW), 6 S.Cantley U14 (WDW)
