Family heirloom is presented to the Golf Club

BANBRIDGE Golf Club began its life in the year 1913. One of the founder members was TS Ferguson.

He was to become captain of the club in 1920. The first prize on his Captain’s Day was a beautiful solid silver cup. It was won by one Jonathan Mooney, who was destined to become the club captain in 1923.

Jonathan was a previous captain of both Banbridge Hockey Club and the now defunct Banbridge Cricket Club.

The silver cup became a family heirloom and it eventually became the possession of Bert Allen, a great nephew of Jonathan Mooney.

Bert Allen has lived a large part of his life in Athens, the capital of Greece. He knew that the centenary of the Golf Club was fast approaching and thought that it would be an appropriate gesture to present the silver cup to the club.

He was in Banbridge last week and a meeting was arranged with the club captain, Sydney Pepper, the honorary secretary, Morris Phillips and club trustee, Bert Wilson.

Jimmy McAdam, a great great nephew of Jonathan Mooney, also attended.

The story of the cup was discussed over an enjoyable meal and then it was officially presented to the club captain, Sydney Pepper.

It could very well form part of the prizes for forthcoming Captain’s Days. Meantime, it will be displayed in the trophy cabinet for everyone to admire.
