Dunbarton make it six in a row

Forth River A 57 (1pt)

Dunbarton A 108 (6pts)

The Dunbarton A team made it six wins from six in the league last Wednesday night when they comfortably defeated second from bottom Forth River in Belfast.

On paper the locals were expected to win this game but will be bitterly disappointed that they did not lift all seven points on offer. Myles Greenfield and his four had a day out, hitting 40 shots and winning by a massive 34 shots. Andy Hughes wasn’t far behind by winning by 22 shots. The other two rinks however were much closer. On rink one Conor McCartan’s rink battled hard to finish ahead by a single shot, while on the rink beside DJ Wilson’s four ran into an inspired home skip and lost 1,1,1,3,2 over the last four ends to lose by three shots. A disappointing ending for DJ’s four but overall a strong performance by the league leaders.

Conor’s rink had a battle royale with their rivals as the game swung to and fro. Despite starting off 7-0 ahead, the locals were quickly pulled back and at halfway the scores were level. Over the final few ends, Conor’s four got their noses back in front and went into the last end four shots ahead. Despite a spirited effort by the hosts, Conor was able to concede a treble and still emerge victorious.

DJ and his front three struggled to build up any advantage as the home skip Mullan was in inspirational form. Little separated the rinks over the first three quarters but when Dunbarton skip DJ removed the closest home bowl for a count of four on end 16, the locals led 18-13 and their point looked odds on. However despite lying three shots on end 19 and five shots on end 20 with the skips only to play, some excellent bowls by the home skip resulted in the locals dropping a 1 and 3 to trail by a shot going into the last end. Unfortunately the last end proved to be the Gilford rink’s worst of the night and they conceded two shots for a very disappointing defeat.

Skip Andy and his four were in cruise control for most of the night and never looked in trouble.

At the midpoint, the away rink led by 12 shots to 5 but over the second half of the game the locals really put their foot on the accelerator. Time and time again there were yellow stickered away bowls surrounding the jack and over the second half they outscored the home rink by 19 shots to 4. A facile night’s work for Andy and his rink.

Rink 4 – M Higgins, C Mulholland, M Trainor, M Greenfield up 40-6

Skip Myles and his rink enjoyed as trouble free an evening of bowls as they have ever had when they simply blew away the home rink. Amazingly the locals managed to score 24 shots in a row to surge ahead from 6-6 to 30-6 after 14 ends and already this was a cricket score. Over the final third, the locals did ease up a bit and managed to finish ahead by a massive 34 shots. An outstanding performance by all four bowlers, especially skip Myles.
