Should the locals score a minimum of five points, the champagne corks will be popped. However, should Belmont not get full points this Wednesday at Ballymena, then the Gilford men may not even need as many as those five points.

Undoubtedly, the Gilford side will be full of confidence of lifting the title as their home form has been phenomenal this season. Nine league games and two cup games have been played at fortress Gilford and all eleven games have been won with a great degree of comfort. Provided the Dunbarton side avoid complacency, the Division One trophy should be back in Gilford by late afternoon next Sunday.

As if that’s not enough, this weekend Dunbarton are also bidding to win not one or two but potentially three Irish titles.

The Irish Championships are being held at Carrickfergus Bowling Club, starting on Thursday afternoon and finishing on Saturday evening. The Gilford club will be represented by Conor McCartan and DJ Wilson in the pairs, Michael Higgins, Tony Bell and Andy Hughes in the triples and then Michael, Andy and DJ will team up with Myles Greenfield in the fours.

The first game involving Dunbarton representatives will be at 4pm on Thursday afternoon when Conor and DJ face the Ballymoney pair of N McCaw and B McAlary. Should they emerge successful from this semi final, they will face either Kelly/McCarthy (CYM) or McHugh/Browne (Whitehead).

On the following morning, Myles’ rink will take on the Lisnagarvey four skipped by Noel Graham, starting at 9am. The winners of this game will then oppose either the reigning champions from St James Gate skipped by R Leonard or the Ballymoney rink skipped by N McCaw.

On Friday afternoon, starting at 2pm, Andy’s triple will take on the Cookstown triple skipped by D McElroy. The winners of this game will then oppose either S Leonard’s St James’ Gate triple or the Bangor threesome skipped by M Shannon.

The Dunbarton club and all at the Leader would like to wish the bowlers all the best and hopefully an Irish title or two may make its way to Gilford on Saturday evening.
