Dunbarton bowlers to represent Ireland in Home Games

This will be Conor’s third series while DJ will be playing for his country for the 12th year in succession. Both Dunbarton bowlers will play at second for the Irish team.

The Inter Association Championships were held at Portstewart and Coleraine over the weekend and it was a disappointing weekend for the Private Greens Team.

With seven Dunbarton bowlers on the team, the Senior Private Greens side were only able to win one game, albeit a number of the locals finished with good records.

Myles Greenfield and DJ Wilson formed a back end and won two of their three games. Andy Hughes, also won two games out of three.

Chris Trainor, Marty Trainor and Conor McCartan teamed up and lost their first two games but enjoyed a two shot victory in their last game. Pete Convery played two games for the Private Greens, winning one and losing one.

Last Tuesday night saw a cracking encounter between arguably two of the best sides in the country as Dunbarton travelled to old rivals Belmont in the league.

Whilst it was very disappointing for the locals to end up losing such a titanic encounter, they can take great heart from this performance.

Marty Trainor grabbed the headlines by playing a magnificent pressure bowl on the final end to win a deserved point, while colleague DJ Wilson led his front three to a very hard fought single shot success.

Rink 1 C Trainor, G Moore, G McElroy, C McCartan down 12-16

Over the first nineteen ends, the two sides were rarely separated by any more than a couple of shots.

With two ends remaining, the hosts led by one shot 12-13 but on the penultimate end, a double was lost and the men in yellow eventually succumbed by four shots.

Rink 2 J Moffatt, C Mulholland, P Convery, DJ Wilson up 18-17

At the halfway mark they had opened up a four shot lead at 9-5

At the three quarter stage, the lead was narrowed slightly to three shots 13-10.

However, the Gilford men bounced back opening up a two shot lead going into the last end and were able to concede a single and win a keenly fought point by the narrowest of margins.

Rink 3 J Kelly, T Bell, A Hughes, M Greenfield down 19-24

Myles’ four started slowly and trailed 2-6 after the first quarter but by the midpoint had bounced back to level the scores at 8 shots apiece.

On end 12, the locals gave themselves a huge boost by scoring a count of five to lead 13-9 but disappointingly it was the home four that then moved up the gears.

A double on end 18 gave the locals hope but on end 19 their point disappeared and as they were the last rink left on the green, the overall win also disappeared as a fabulous bowl by the home skip turned the jack for four shots.

Rink 4 M Higgins, J Magennis, M Merritt, M Trainor up 20-16

Skip Marty and his rink got off to a flyer and after just seven ends had stormed 10-2 ahead.

With two ends remaining, the locals held a six shot lead but a terrific final delivery by the home skip turned the jack for four shots and their point was in danger.

The Belmont front end drew three shots, but skip Marty produced a terrific delivery to spring the jack to lie shot.

Next up for the Dunbarton A team is a home league match against Pickie this Tuesday night (2nd).
