Dromore Cooke up a storm

FOLLOWING the abandoned game the previous week against Portadown the Dromore men were keen to get back playing again after the Christmas festivities had died down.

Coach Bekker picked an unchanged side and impressed on his young charges the importance of a home win at this juncture of the season.

Conditions were very wet under foot but the pitch was pronounced playable. Dromore started brightly and forced the Cooke side onto the back foot from the outset with charges from Pepper and Dalton setting the tone for the half, but Dromore lacked patience and composure close to the try line to gain an advantage.

Cooke also pressed for an opening score but superb defence led by Fitzpatrick repelled their advances. A fine penalty by Steenson on the stroke of half time gave Dromore the lead.

The second period was played mostly in the Cooke half with Dromore having the measure of the their city opponents. They pounded the Cooke line but failed to make the break through until 75 minutes when good work by the Dromore pack set up good quick ball for Steenson who fed Roderick Dalton on the charge in midfield. The giant second row showed great determination to power over under the posts, and with Steenson adding the extras Dromore were home and dry with a much deserved 10-0 victory.

Club President Denis Savage was jubilant at the final whistle, “I am very impressed with our team today, we set our goal to achieve a win today and the boys worked very hard to get that win, I’m delighted.

“Our second XV also pulled off a fantastic win against Ballynahinch which should see them go top of their league and our mini P6 and P7’s put on a fantastic display of mini rugby before the senior fixtures, in all a great day to be part of the Rugby family at Barban Hill”
