Dromore come back to seal victory over Donaghadee

Dromore lost the toss and had to kick-off with the blustery wind at their backs. Blown forward, they dominated possession and territory for most of the first-half. Inteligent kicking by Jenks, Stewart and full-back Russell kept the Dromore pack moving forward and from a lineout close to the 22, Dromore powered over following a driving maul, veteran Rory Pepper getting the score with Jenks adding the extras.

Andy Black thought he had touched down for another try ten minutes later but unfortunately for Dromore the referee awarded a five meter scrum rather than the score. Dromore continued to look for another score but credit to the Donaghadee defence they held out. A rare visit to the Dromore half saw the visitors awarded a penalty which they converted just on the stroke of half-time to leave the score 7-3 to Dromore.

The Dromore supporters wondered if the boys had scored enough points with the wind behind them and this worry was further compounded when the ‘Dee winger pounced on a loose ball to score a fine solo try. The conversion was added and Dromore faced an up hill task if they were to secure the points, now three points behind.

With a small but vocal crowd braving the elements, the Dromore men warmed to the task, and stormed up the pitch. Again a driving maul produced the match winning try, with Harshaw diving over and Jenks converting to seal a superb win.

Dromore played out the match in Donaghadee teritory and were unlucky not to increase their total, but were happy at the final whistle to have secured the win.

President Denis Savage was delighted after the match. He said: “We worked very hard for that win and that is very pleasing. Conditions were tough but we showed great heart in securing the win.”
