Dollingstown go through in cup

DOLLINGSTOWN reached the fourth round of the Marshall Cup with a 3-1 home victory over Banbridge AFC on Saturday.

Manager Gary Duke made six changes to the side which won the previous game away to Fivemiletown, showing the depth of squad available at Dollingstown this season.

However, It was Intermediate B side Banbridge who bossed the opening exchanges. However, despite enjoying a lot of possession, Banbridge rarely threatened Hyndes in the Town goal.

Debutant Andrew Uprichard should have opened the scoring on 15 minutes only to fire straight at the advancing keeper when put through. Montgomery also wasted a similar opportunity when he fired wide of the left post.

The wake up call came on 35 minutes when a free kick on the right brought a header which Hyndes could only parry to a Banbridge forward who slid into an empty net for a shock lead.

Going a goal down spurred Dollingstown into action. Adam Walker got them back on level terms on 40 minutes with a fantastic half volley.

After a dressing down by management Dollingstown were much better in the second period as they attacked at will and kept the ball much better.

Uprichard,Montgomery and Stoddard were combining well with full backs Walker and Denver producing some great crosses.

Good play through the centre put the home side in the lead on 52 minutes, a neat passing move resulted in Uprichard being taken down by the keeper for a penalty kick. The same player scored from the spot to make it 2-1.

Soon after it was three when Montgomery placed the ball passed the keeper from six yards. It was all Dollingstown now as they threatened to run riot. Chance after chance came and went with numerous one on ones wasted and guilt edged opportunities spurned. The introduction of top scorer Thompson still couldnt produce the fourth as he rattled the crossbar and missed with a near post strike. Moffett then headed over at the back post.

Man of the Match was Adam Walker

It was a decent second half performance but an improved all round display will be needed to progress into the third round of the Irish Cup this Saturday with Amateur League side Lisburn Rangers the visitors to Planters Park.
