Division One of the Pool League kicks off

Gilford Inn 5 O’Reilly’s 3: Gilford had a cagey start to the campaign, losing their first two matches to an in-form Neil Monaghan and Ruiari McGrath.

They then hit back with three wins on the bounce.

O’Reilly’s finally found their feet again in the sixth frame with another McGrath, Aidy, doing the damage, before taking home both the doubles matches to steal victory from the jaws of defeat.

Imperial 3 Railway Inn 5: The Railway’s introduction the pool league come as somewhat of a surprise, but when Damian Paxton wiped down the cue after many years out of the game he brought home the bacon in what was the first of three wins in a row.

Not be be embarrassed R Kerr and I Wilson pulled two back, defeating team captain G Murphy and A Paxton.

It looked like the Railway may have just had a touch of beginners luck, though Joe McGivern stepped up to the plate to secure a point after a black ball fight. He must have taken a few lessons from older brother Brendy!

Captain Murphy made up for defeat in the singles to secure the match with Damian Paxton in the doubles. Imperial pegged one back but it was too late.

Bus Bar 2 Market Bar B 6: Things looked promising for Tam Barney’s after winning the first frame but it all went down hill from there.

S.Roe won the first of six frames in a row. P McStraw, A Barr, D Russell, P Beggs all won their singles to secure a well deserved victory. N Finnegan and P McDonald rubbed salt in the wound winning the seventh.

The Bus Bar won a consolation at the end but it was a pretty poor result.

Anglers 4 First & Last 4: Pre-match nerves told early as both teams fought out a hard earned draw. M. Cosgrove got the better of a lack lustre “Tae-pot” before “Jungle” Jonny McCullough clawed one back.

The Lynesses both cruised to victory to assure a chance of a win but Angler’s long term captain BJ McAnearney kept the game close, beating The F & L captain B. Burns.

C. Parrott was said to have been “shaking like a leaf” when he potted the black to go 4-2 up.

Odds on to go and win, the F&L got complacent and lost both doubles matches. Brian Lyness missing a straight black in the process!
