Derby win for Moneyslane U14s

Moneyslane U14s 2

SLANE U14s entertained Rathfriland in the league derby at the weekend and it turned out to be a great game for the players and spectators.

Rathfriland got off to a good start and had the ball in the ball of the Slane net early in the game with a well taken goal from James Shilliday who found the far corner with a left footed shot.

Slane applied the pressure to get back in the game and had a couple of corners that were well cleared by the Town defence. Ervine floated a free kick to the back post and Andrew Neil headed just wide of the post.

The Slane back four were working hard as Rathfriland had speed up front with Johnston and Cochrane by Dale McMullen, Gareth McCabe, Gareth Adams and William Trimble were solid and standing strong. Sam Green pulled off two great saves to keep the score at 1-0 at the break.

Slane were attacking and looked confident on the ball against a strong Rathfriland side who were physically a lot stronger than Slane. Disaster struck for Slane when Green dropped the ball, the lineman waved his flag and the ref gave a goal.

Rathfriland went three up when a penalty was awarded for a hand ball inside the box. Bickerstaff hit the spot kick into the top corner of the net for his second goal.

Slane had a free kick 25 yards out, Ervine stepped up and hit a thunder bolt of a shot that sailed into the net to give the young Slane side a lift.

Steven Bready raced through to hit the Town’s fourth goal with a well worked move and a good finish.

With 10 minutes left Ervine pulled back another goal when he neatly volleyed a lobbed effort that the keeper could only get a finger tip to.
