Defeat for Under-13's against table toppers

COLERAINE lost to table toppers Malone in the Under-13 Cup at the weekend. The scoreline of 29-12 doesn't reflect the excellent efforts of the Coleraine side.

In perfect conditions for rugby Coleraine were under the cosh early on and conceded a try after 5 minutes when the Malone outside half outpaced the Coleraine defence to score under the posts. This proved to be the pattern for the rest of the first half with a further 3 trys added to the Malone score, two more by the same player. Despite their best endeavours Coleraine failed to score. The half time score was 24-0 in Malone’s favour

A stern talking to at half time by the Coleraine coach Jim Wilmont motivated the side into producing a much better performance in the second half. Despite conceding a try at the start of the half the side knuckled down with the pack gradually getting on top of their bigger opposition.

Flankers Callum McAleese and Thomas Moore's aggressive tackling stifled several Malone attacks and the hard work of second row James Breslin in the rucks and mauls secured good ball for the Coleraine backs.

Ten minutes into the second half their endeavours paid off, when quick ball at a ruck created an opportunity for scrum half Graham McAleese who, despite carrying an injury, outpaced the covering defence to score under the posts.

A second try followed soon after when centre Daniel Scott rounded off a fine performance picking up a loose ball just inside the Malone half and showing excellent pace and strength burst through the floundering defence to score a thoroughly deserved try close to the posts. The try was converted to leave the score at 29-12. This was how the match finished.

Despite losing the coach was pleased with this talented side’s efforts.
