Defeat for Banbridge ladies firsts despite a fine performance

The match started brightly with both teams keeping possession of the ball well, however, neither created many chances in the opening 10 minutes.

As the match went on Bann grew in confidence with some great passing between the midfield and forward line.

The continued pressing on Armagh’s defence led to Bann winning their first short corner of the game. Unfortunately a good effort by captain Rachel Cairns was narrowly put wide.

Half way through the first half and there was nothing between the two teams, however a quick break from Armagh resulted in a three on two in Bann’s ‘D’, a shot from Armagh’s centre forward brought a great stick save from Bann keeper Sarah McCabe.

Armagh started to get on top of the game creating a number of openings and winning numerous short corners, however Bann’s goalkeeper was on fine form to prevent Armagh taking the lead.

The first half was coming to a close and Bann started to show more signs of breaking through Armagh’s defence.

After some excellent team play which started from the defence right through to the forward line it resulted in Cathy Rees deflecting in a brilliant reverse stick cross from Amy Atkinson. 1-0 Bann.

Bann started second half brightly, with good pressure on Armagh’s defence as they looked to pick up where they left in the first half.

Half way through the second half and Armagh started to get on top of the game, however Bann’s defence remained resilient throughout.

The constant pressure resulted in a number of short corners for Armagh, unfortunately a good short corner routine found the bottom left corner of Bann’s goal. 1-1.

The match was drawing to a close and Armagh were awarded another short corner which was deflected in at the back post. 2-1 Armagh. Final score 2-1 to Armagh. A great team performance by the girls.
