Debutants impress in Junior Cowdy match

BANBRIDGE played Ashfield in the first leg of their first round match of the Junior Cowdy last Sunday.

This game was at home and the team captain, Tom Fee, was true to his word and selected no less than six players who were making their debut for the club. His confidence in these young men was rewarded as they won the home leg by three games to one.

The four games panned out as follows: Colm McGreevey and Adrian Barry got off to a dreadful start against Damian Kilgallon and John Harte. They lost the first four holes and, try as they may, they were not able to claw them back. They lost by 4 and 3.

Shane Crossan and John Convery play together every Saturday and they know each other’s game inside out. They blended together perfectly and they beat Aidan Carragher and Noel Hughes 6 and 4.

The same could be said of John Fitzpatrick and Jim Lennon. They may be newcomers to the game of golf but they are both fiercely competitive. They too played really well and they beat Seamus McNulty and Gary Loughran 6 and 4. To say that they were pleased would be the understatement of the year.

To crown it all, Jonathan Kerr and Frank Mooney brought in that vital final point. They started slowly but, once they got into the pace of the game, there was no stopping them. They beat Gareth McLoughlin and Tom Rushe by 5 and 4.

This was a brilliant 3-1 win and we all hope that they can carry that form to the away leg in Ashfield on Sunday May 9.

The match is far from over but this young team from Banbridge is full of confidence and they will be difficult to beat.

Whatever happens, it has been great fun so far. And isn’t that what golf’s all about?
