Cyclocross season is well under way for Dromara Cycling Club members

A few years ago race entries overall struggled to reach the 100 mark-now with the sport in Ireland taking off it is rare to see entries below the 300 mark, such is the popularity of cyclocross across the island, and it’s great to see so many riders taking part.

Dromara Cycling Club members are basking in this fantastic winter sport. More and more members are switching to cyclocross to maintain their fitness over the winter, and this then leads to racing-once you’re hooked there’s no going back.

The Ulster Cyclocross series started back in October and Dromara CC members have been in the thick of the action in almost every race category-a great effort considering a few years ago no club members took part in the main cyclocross races.

Races have previously been held in Lurgan, Dungannon, Fermanagh and most recently Larne-there are races taking place down South as well and they are just as popular as the Ulster series.

Round four of the Ulster series took place at Seacourt in Larne on Sunday past, this round being hosted by Team Madigan.

Once again club members were out in force as the sun shone on the race circuit that overlooked the Irish sea.

In the under 14 race it was Ben Wilson from the club who took the top step on the podium as he came in first place, a well deserved win after coming back from injury.

Frasier Harrower came in next in 14th place.

Next was the cyclocross ‘B’ race and it was Davy Broome who was first Dromara rider home as he stormed to an excellent seventh place.

Brian Wilson was next in 12th place, with Graham Beckett and Paul Mawhirt coming in 23rd and 24th respectively.

Adrian Booth finished in 35th place whilst Mike Barton placed 49th.

In the women’s cyclocross race Dianne Wilson, who swapped running up mountains for a cyclocoss bike, finished in a brilliant 2nd place.

The cyclocross ‘A’ race saw Barry Van Kellett in his new skinsuit finish just outside the podium places in 4th place.

Graham Smyth was next from the Dromara contingent in 38th place, with Peter Davison and Martin Grimley not far behind in 40th and 41st place. Richard Cowan rolled in over the finish line in 52nd whilst Derek Graham rounded off the club members in 64th.

Once again a brilliant showing from the club-great to see cyclocross booming in the club and hopefully it will encourage more to get out and enjoy what the sport has to offer.
