Guy stands out with bat and ball

The Lurgan all-rounder hit 7 sixes and 8 fours in his total in just 47 deliveries before destroying the Dundrum batting, hitting the stumps for 5 of his 6 wickets.

Not that Guy lacked support. Professional Niranjan Godbole joined opener Bruce Topping after the dismissal of the dangerous Stephen Johnston, bowled for 3 with the score on 18.

Both batsmen started to find the boundary regularly, bringing the 100 up in the 18th over before Lurgan skipper Topping mistimed a shot deep into the covers to be caught by Connor off Hassard for an excellent 51. Godbole was continuing to play shots to all parts of the ground and after Stephen Chambers departed for a duck, Callum Grieve joined the professional in the middle and the pair added 49 runs for the fourth wicket. Grieve then middled a half volley from Rodney Hassard only for the Dundrum bowler to take a stinging return catch above his head to dismiss the batsman for 18 with the total on 168.

This brought John Guy to the middle in the 36th over and he was soon into his stride, striking his first six over the boundary at the river end of the ground.

Meanwhile at the other end, Godbole was driving and pulling his way towards another century when on 92, he pushed forward to a flighted delivery from Lowey, only to pop up a chance for teenager Stuart Campbell who hung on to a fine diving catch and Lurgan were 216 for 5.

Richard Clarke (15 not out) joined Guy and over the last 8 overs they added 92 runs to take the Town total to 308, with Guy dominating the strike finishing undefeated just 6 runs short of his century. It was a formidable target considering they had been put in to bat on a soft wicket and slow outfield.

Dundrum had only one tactical option available to them when they took to the crease and that was to attack the Lurgan bowling from the start.

However, John Guy soon had opening batsmen Hassard and Maguire clean bowled and back in the pavilion with just 14 runs on the board.

The home side continued to go after the Lurgan bowling and Lyness, Grieve, Guy and Peter Maxwell all had the displeasure of seeing deliveries dispatched for maximums into the adjacent river. The 100 came up in the 22nd over but by then 5 wickets were gone and any chance of producing a shock was gone, Niranjan Godbole having taken two wickets in the one over, McNerlin to an excellent catch above his head at mid-off by Stephen Johnston and Sullivan clean bowled first ball for a duck.

John Guy returned to take the wicket of the home side’s top scorer Connor, bowled for 63 and the rest was a formality. Jason Maxwell took a spectacular diving catch off to finish the game with Dundrum all out for 166 in the 32nd over.

John Guy claimed an Ulster Bank award with 6 for 27 off 8 overs and Niranjan Godbole added 3 for 27 off 8 to his 92 with the bat.
