Coburn has a cracking score on St Patrick's Day

He last hit the headlines by reaching last season’s matchplay final. He was, in the end, beaten by Verdun Bond but last week, he took top prize.

He did it on the day that traditionally signals the star of the golfing season proper. And what a glorious day it was!

The sun was shining and all 18 holes were in play. And the course was remarkably dry after a few really good days. Everyone was happy and raring to go.

Coburn (12) was in top form. He played the 18 holes in only four over par gross for a winning total of 43 stableford points.

F. Rowan (15) is a new member with plenty of golfing ability. He finished runner-up with 42 points. By the time he features again in the prize list, I will have learnt his first name.

Aidan Lavery (18) has got his season off to a great start with a third place finish on St. Patrick’s Day. Aidan had 42 points.

When it comes to the best gross prize, Rory Leonard (scr) is always the man to beat. Nobody could do it this time although Kenny Stevenson came close. Rory shot a level par round to win the best gross with 36 gross points.

And, last but not least, Merton McDowell (21) won the prize for best senior player with 41 points.

So we are now up and running. Let the fun commence.

SWEEP RESULT

The cream certainly came to the top in this nine holes sweep.

Three of the lower handicapped players took the first three positions. Best of all was Fergie Cosgrove who went round in only two over par.

The big winner, though, was John Crothers who scooped the entire twos pot.

1st- Fergie Cosgrove (12) Nett 32.

2nd- John McDowell (8) Nett 32.

3rd- Paul Wylie (12) Nett 33.
