Club plays host to Easter tournaments

In the Easter Cup the top two out of each group qualified for the main tournament today with Killen Rangers winning the Cup in a deserved but somewhat shock result.

Killen topped Group B and met Group A runners up Comber Rec in their semi final and had to be separated by penalty kicks after a very entertaining 2-2 draw.

The Castlederg based side progressed to the final against Group B runners up Portadown who rode their luck at times in their Semi Final against Group A winners Dromore Amateurs.

Portadown took it to penalties after a 0-0 draw with Dromore missing their first two penalties and were eliminated.

The final was a close run affair and also had to be decided by spot kicks after a scoreless draw with Killen Rangers eventually winning 4-3 over Portadown in the shootout. Congratulations go to Killen Rangers.

The secondary competition, the Easter Shield, was created to give all teams participating a chance at a semi final and trophy.

The final was contested by the third and fourth placed teams from Group A with Banbridge Town getting a bye to the final whilst Craigavon City overcame hosts Banbridge Rangers 2-0 in the other Semi Final.

A very close final was decided by a penalty shootout after a 0-0 draw between the Town and Craigavon.

The shootout went on well into sudden death with Banbridge Town securing their first silverware of the season by holding their nerve and winning 8-7 on spot kicks. Congratulations Banbridge Town!

Player of the Tournament was Amanda Morton (Dromore Amateurs) with Aine Hoy (Portadown) runner-up.

The top scorer was Emma Kee from Killen Rangers with four goals, while Kerry Taggart of Dromore Amateurs was second on three.

In the U11 tournament four teams came to Cheney Park to play three round robin games before the senior ladies got their tournament underway.

Moneyslane won all three of their games, Lurgan Town won two, Banbridge Rangers won one and Dromore lost all three games in their first ever outing.

The focus was on enjoyment and promoting girls football with every participant leaving with a 1Direction Easter Egg.

Banbridge Rangers would like to thank organisers Trevor McMinn and Mark Wilson for making the ladies day such a success.

There were a lot of people who volunteered their services including the two referees Neil Wilson and Jason Hillis.

The BBQ/Tuck Shop helpers included Tanya Thompson, Caroline Mulligan, David Humphries and John Hillis.

The club is grateful to Shoefair Sports who kindly donated the match balls for tournament.

Most of all thanks the players and coaches of the clubs taking part especially the coaches at Banbridge Rangers who are giving up their time to build girls football. Well done to Joanne McKinstry, Stuart Cairns, Steven McMinn, Robbie Baird, Davy Humpries and Davy Thompson.
