Clash of heads marrs Town U13s' derby victory

THIS match had an unfortunate beginning for Banbridge when, after only two minutes, Andrew Martin and Philip O’Keefe both competed for the ball and clashed heads.

Andrew sustained a nasty gash above his eye requiring a trip to the hospital and nine stitches and Philip a very painful cheekbone although he was able to play on.

The match continued with both teams evenly matched throughout the first half and very few chances on either goal. Hillsborough had one clear shot on goal but keeper William Maxwell made an excellent save.

On the wings Josh Cargin and David Gray made some penetrating runs but the attacks couldn't quite make it through to test the Hillsborough keeper.

At half time Philip O'Keefe, still in pain, was unable to carry on and Banbridge played the second half with 10 men but this seemed to inspire them and they had the majority of the play. Stephen McCavitt went very close with a direct free kick halfway through the half but just went over the crossbar.

Every one of the gallant 10 fought hard and just when it looked as if a goalless draw would be the result Banbridge were awarded another direct free kick about 35 yards out. With the wind behind him Stephen McCavitt gave it everything he had and the ball flew into the roof of the net over the keepers head to give Banbridge a well deserved victory.
