Cecil is a double winner

SATURDAY JANUARY 23: Last season Kenny Arlow won the Saturday Sweep twice in the month of January.

This year Cecil Johnstone has done likewise. Cecil played the 14 holes in four under par gross and he won the low section with 39 points.

He was three under par the previous week so that puts him seven under par for two consecutive Saturdays. That is marvellous golf indeed.

John Hanna won the middle section with 44 points off a handicap of 17. To reach that score John had to go round in three under par gross. Granted, a few of the par fours were very short but it was still an incredible score.

SECTION 0–9: 1st, Cecil Johnstone (9) 39 points; 2nd, Shane Rooney (9) 38.

SECTION 10–17: 1st, John Hanna (17) 44; 2nd, Alan Dale (12) 42; 3rd, Vaughan Lamont (12) 42.

SECTION 18+: 1ST, Stephen Orr (19) 42; 2nd, Charles McCartan (21) 41; 3rd, Aidan Lavery (19) 41.

SUNDAY JANUARY 24 - Alex Clarke had a relatively quiet year in 2009 but I sense a revival this time round. He is playing more golf and playing well. This is his first win of the season and it will certainly not be his last.

The shot of the day was hit by Hugo Downey. He chipped into the hole from off the green for the only two of the day. He picked up a massive rollover jackpot. Happy days for Hugo!

1st, Alex Clarke (13) Nett 32.5; 2nd, Sean McGreevey (19) Nett 32.5.

MONDAY JANUARY 25 - Philip Mallon is off the mark in 2010. Philip hardly ever misses a sweep and in the course of a season he picks up quite a few prizes. I could safely predict that this win is the first of many for Philip in 2010.

Philip also had the only two in the competition and that added to his prize fund.

1st, Philip Mallon (8) 32 points; 2nd, Malcolm Hanna (13) 30.

THURSDAY JANUARY 28 - Last season Jim Ledlie had to wait until March 2 before he won his first sweep.

No such problems this year. He is off the mark thanks to an excellent score of 37 points.

1st, Jim Ledlie (24) 37; 2nd, John Hanna (17) 33.
