Brian Curran takes the Maxwell Cup honours

WEDNESDAY August 15 saw the last Banbridge CC club road race of the 2012 season with the popular Gilford circuit being the venue for the second round of the Maxwell Cup.

With the club league championship still up for grabs between a few riders a good finish was important to maintain progress with only a few events remaining,

Strong winds and rain were the order of the day but while the rain eased off for the evening the strong wind persisted which made the racing interesting to say the least.

Four groups of riders set of for four laps instead of the normal five, due to fading light, of the fast circuit at different time intervals and this made the racing fast and furious,

The main progress was made by group three which had club league contender Brian Curran, aided by Ryan Moore, driving the group on in the hope of taking maximum points.

They swept up groups one and two and going into the last lap the spectators at the finish were wondering could they hold off the fast charging group four which was gaining fast,

Taking the last corner the riders would have to contend with a very strong headwind for the last 500 metres but which group would appear first?

As it panned out group three were still in the lead with Brian Curran just holding off Ewan Anderson for the win and with it regain top spot in the league,

Chris McCann, Ryan Moore, Gareth McGreevey and Marty Winters took the next places with Russell White just holding off Kevin McAlinden in a two up sprint for seventh and the first of the group four riders.

Afterwards everyone congratulated Brian on what was a popular win for a rider who has completed every club event this season.

The next club race is next Wednesday night and is a 10 mile TT on the Castlewellan Road course.

As the nights are starting to draw in could all riders please be at the start from 6.30pm onwards to enable a start at 7pm sharp.
