The 25-year-old fights at 71Kg at Intermediate level and his most recent bout was on Tuesday last saw him in a title fight for the Donegal Open in Buncrana, which he won over three rounds against a Finn Valley opponent.

“I started boxing just for fitness and I just stuck with it,” he said amiably.

Asked what attracted him to the sport he said he enjoyed the work and the discipline and seeing it pay off lit it did last Tuesday at Buncrana.

“I love the work, the fitness and the training and it is good to see your hard work and effort producing results and getting you through to finals. It is a good feeling to know that the effort is all worth it,” he said.

Stressing that boxing had nothing to do with force, Joe said that a lot of what won titles and fights was down to learning tactics to survive in the ring, and it was nailing tactics that allowed a boxer to maintain a fresh presence in the right from the start to the end of a competition.

“It is hard keeping focused for a full fight and having the determination to keep going when I was tiring out. It was all down to training and tactics,” he said.
