Irish title for Adrianna

BANBRIDGE Boxing Club hit the golden heights once again when 15-year-old Adrianna McMullan took her second consecutive national title in the Girls Championships in Dublin.

Boxing out of the red corner Adrianna faced Munster girl, Rena De Silva, in the 75kg final.

Adrianna came out of the corner charged and ready to do battle. She immediately took centre ring and led from the bell, throwing a straight left jab, followed by a powerful swinging right hook. This was a scoring combination and De Silva couldn’t quite get to grips with the Banbridge force.

The bell sounded the end of the first round and the score monitor flashed up Ulster 8-2 Munster.

Second round and Adrianna performed at the same high work rate, moving out of De Silva’s range and scoring on the attack, landing jab after jab. By the end of the second round the Banbridge girl had a 15-4 points lead.

The supporters sensed that this was a medal winning performance and the tempo swelled with victory close. Adrianna scored two points from hard straight jabs and the referee had seen enough. With over a minute to go he signalled time on the bout with Adrianna McMullan going out the winner on a referee’s stoppage.

This was a tremendous performance and this meant there was another national title for Banbridge Amateur Boxing Club. Adrianna will now join Conor Martin on the Elite High Performance Squad and the club now hopes to see her wearing an Irish vest very soon.

The club wishes to thank ‘Mr Sooty’ who sponsored Adrianna in her title winning quest.
