Boxer Adam 'an exemplary ambassador' for Banbridge

"AN exemplary ambassador for the town of Banbridge."

That was how Team Manager Sean Crowley described the performance of local boxer Adam McBurney last weekend in London.

The local Boxing Clubs’ hard working middleweight went out with the Derrylin Ulster Select team to the famous Haringey Club in London.

Adam’s opponent was Senior England Middleweight, David Cinko. Boxing in front of his home crowd, Cinko started from the bell like a pro, pushing forward, throwing big punches and looking for a fast, sensational finish.

McBurney was determined to thwart Cinko’s intentions with nippy footwork, quick feints and when towards the end of the first round McBurney picked his opening and caught Cinko with a powerful right hook, only the bell saved him from a standing count.

The Banbridge boxer went into the second round knowing that Cinko was determined to perform in front of the home crowd and that would be his downfall. McBurney allowed him to come forward and just picked off his scores.

McBurney was in complete control in the third round and took a majority decision from the judges – no mean feat on away territory.

Ulster won the match 5-4 and McBurney was pipped at the post for Best Boxer of the night by Ulster Senior Heavy Weight Champion Sean Crudden.

Adam is now well prepared for the forthcoming Mid Ulster Intermediate Championships in the coming weeks.

Although the boxing season is nearing its close its still business as usual for the Club with Banbridge young southpaw Adam Clydesdale taking a coveted scalp at Bishop Kelly ABC last Friday night when he boxed the bout of his career to take the decision against home boxer Chris McGowan in a tremendous contest that had the crowd on its feet.

Club Chairman Jim Scullion is delighted with the progress that the Club has made this season. ‘We are really finishing the season on a high, which is great. Decisions haven’t exactly gone our way this season but we have just plodded on and now the results are coming.

“Adam has represented the Club honourably and its good to see him getting the decision in London and young Clydesdale took a hard fought win. And with Adrianna McMullan weighing in to the Irish Cadets at the weekend – who knows? Banbridge could be on route for a title yet.”

Finally Jim, on behalf of the Club wished the Banbridge Boxing Club Belfast Marathon Relay Team all the best for the Bank Holiday Monday’s big event.
